英语读书笔记 Ode To A Nightingale

after reading ode to a nightingale, i felt my blood boiled, i was on fire and full of enthusiasm and just could not calm down. it is so romantic and i had been touched so much. in fact, although the title of the poem is “ode to a nightingale”, throughout the poem, it has basically little words describing the nightingale directly however the writer mainly uses the graceful image of nightingale to express his own feelings. it is said that a nightingale will die on a full moon night. and at midnight, it will fly to the highest rose-tree, and uses the thorn scratch its chest, then makes out a sonorous sound, singing loudly until the blood of the heart dries and reds the roses on the branches. meanwhile this sound of singing seems like could penetrate everywhere and everything and keep an eternal life. i see the energy and hope of life and a bright future, and suddenly get courage and become positive. i think the poem makes me feel in that way.

and the author of ode to nightingale is john keats who is a romantic poet from uk. he was born at a poor family in the end of 18 century in london. in 1818, when keats was 23 years old he got tuberculosis while also was deeply in love with miss fannie boone. just under such a terrible condition which between agony, poverty and sweetness, keats was quite enthusiastic, full of grief and indignation and kept the desire for life in his heart. therefore, he wrote the poem ode to a nightingale on a sober night and companied with the loud sound of the birds.

英语读书笔记 The Red and the Black

the red and the black is a profound and witty book about the rise of a poor, handsome and intellectually gifted, young provincial into the salons of high society in paris.

handsome and ambitious, julien sorel is determined to rise above his humble peasant origins and make something of his life-by adopting the code of hypocrisy by which his society operates. julien ultimately commits a crime-out of passion, principle, or insanity-that will bring about his downfall. the red and the black is a lively, satirical picture of french restoration society after waterloo, riddled with corruption, greed, and ennui. the complex, sympathetic portrayal of julien, the cold exploiter whose machiavellian campaign is undercut by his own emotions, makes him stendhal's most brilliant and human creation-and one of the greatest characters in european literature.

i really enjoyed this book. unlike many reviewers, i feel the book does transcend time. american people and culture today, computers and all, are a lot like those in stendhal's 19th century france.

the main characters strike me as real, and quite complex. julien is a typical adolescent/ young adult: idealistic, searching and unsure of himself. to me, it is amazing to what how the world interacts with and alters his self-image. mathilde is equally interesting. she reminds me of a flighty alternative girl, looking for a dream of simmering romance. and mme de renal is a wonderful, believable woman, falling in love late in life, victim of the missing husband syndrome.

英语读书笔记 Book Review of Jane Eyre

  background of jane eyre

jane eyre is the masterpiece of charlotte bronte, an english woman author in 19th century. the works possess romanticism and realism. it is also thought that this book is author’s autobiography.

  introduction of jane eyre

jane was a pure and thinkable woman, who lived in substrata of society and struck with life. but she was fractious and the sprite of perusing happiness. the works sing the love respecting each other and break away from conman customs and preoccupation. the most successful of this book is to figure a female image who dared to gainst and try for liberte and egalite.

  characteristics of characters

jane eyre was a born resister, whose parents went off when she was very young, and her aunt, the only relative she had, treated her as badly as a ragtag. she had a terrible childhood but it’s not affected her future because she is poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl.

jane was also a thinkable woman in her love, she thought love is equal, free and respecting, so she gain a happy ending with beautiful personality.

  my thoughts of jane eyre

jane owns goodness for her lover, rochester, who lost arms and eyes, and also for someone who had hurt her.
